Pope Francis speaks on his failing health on his flight back to Rome

This Sunday, on the flight that took him back to Rome, Pope Francis spoke about some of the health problems that have afflicted him in recent months, at 85 years of age.

“My health is a bit fickle, because I have this knee problem that causes me problems when walking. It's a bit annoying, but it's getting better, at least I can walk, until two weeks ago I couldn't do anything," he said at the press conference on April 3, in response to a question about how he had felt on the two-week trip. days.

According to the Pope, at his age, "you don't know how the game is going to end." "Hopefully it goes well," he said.

During his visit to Malta, additional measures were taken to ensure that Pope Francis did not have to climb stairs.

At the welcoming ceremony, he went down an elevator instead of down the plane's stairs.

A special elevator was also installed in St. Paul's Basilica in Rabat, the island's capital, so that Pope Francis can visit and pray in the crypt grotto, a much-loved Catholic pilgrimage site in Malta.

The trip to Malta was Pope Francis' first papal trip in 2022.
